Rebecca Simiyu is a 24-year-old queer Kenyan-Canadian photographer currently based in Winnipeg, trying to find her voice and her place as a black woman in art. After recently finishing her studies at the University of Manitoba, she is looking forward to continuing her journey as a photographer. Rebecca is inspired by life, friends, and her imagination. Her art consists of photographs of life happening around her, from scenery to people, and sometimes herself. She photographs in both digital and 35mm film formats. She is a visual storyteller, trying to tell stories—real and fictional—that can make people feel something. Her passion for photography began 8 years ago, since then she has done both freelance and contract work. She is a recent recipient of the Creative Expression Award from the University of Manitoba. Rebecca’s goals in the future include building a career for herself in lifestyle, fashion, and commercial photography.
